Dr. Anna Michel has been appointed because the unique chief scientist of the Woods Gap Oceanographic Institution’s National Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF).

Michel, an companion scientist in WHOI’s Division of Utilized Ocean Physics and Engineering, is the first lady to help on this excessive-profile role efficient July 1st, 2021.

The Chief Scientist for Deep Submergence (CSDS) role areas her at the forefront of deep submergence for the academic analysis neighborhood, working as a liaison to connect scientists with the WHOI teams that purpose WHOI’s underwater vehicles.

Michel talked about:

“I am ready for making exercise of my experience to abet enhance this crucial, collaborative program. The work of the NDSF permits the oceanographic neighborhood to search out, pattern, and plan the deep ocean and it’s some distance fascinating to be in a spot to work with scientists on how easiest to enhance their analysis projects.

“This unique place also permits me to continue to be a listener within the neighborhood; I’m in setting up initiatives that would possibly perhaps presumably presumably bring extra diversity to deep ocean science, and to search out ways to enhance and reach abilities by capability of computer science integration, man made intelligence and unique sensor programs.”

In accordance to WHOI Vice President for Marine Facilities and Operations Get rid of Munier:

“Anna balances her work within the lab with frequent sea time plus a range of actions linked to training and diversification of ocean science and engineering, all of which have faith earned her the honor of the neighborhood. We stumble on forward to her unique leadership role.”

Michel graduated with her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography/Utilized Ocean Science and Engineering in 2007. In 2012, she began her career as an assistant scientist at WHOI. She went on to lead the Chemical Sensors Laboratory as an companion scientist, which works on setting up unique sensors for studying ocean chemistry, in conjunction with methane sensing, carbon dioxide sensing, and microplastics sensing.

The NDSF operates, maintains and coordinates WHOI’s three deep ocean vehicles in conjunction with:

  • The human-occupied vehicle (HOV) Alvin
  • The remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Jason/Medea
  • The self sustaining underwater vehicle (AUV) Sentry
